AGC CELEBRATES INDEPENDENCE IN STYLE

September 30 marks the day when Botswana gained its independence from British colonial rule in 1966. This significant turning point in Botswana's history is greeted with great enthusiasm as it symbolizes the nation’s journey towards self-governance, prosperity, and unity. The country gathers during this time to remember its past and to celebrate the hard-won freedom it now enjoys. The Attorney General's Chambers and Directorate of Public Prosecution employees decided to put on a stunning celebration of Botswana's 57 years of Independence, highlighting their rich cultural heritage and the spirit of unity that bonds them.

Delivering her stirring speech, the Attorney General Ms Mmako Mpelegang Abram acknowledged the visionary leadership of our country, past and present and particularly that of His Excellency the President, Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi for his commitment to fostering a Mindset change in our society that inspires and aligns perfectly with the core values and mission of the AGC. She emphasized the President’s vision to challenge us to evolve, to adapt, and to become the catalysts of change in our own right. “The Mindset Change Initiative that our President is championing, calls for us to re-evaluate our roles and responsibilities within the AGC” said Ms. Abram.

Among the speakers were the two attorneys, representing the diversity of the legal community. The Government Attorney Mr. Dittah Molodi, who is one of the seasoned lawyers with years of experience, shared valuable insights gleaned through his years of service. He inspired the audience with his journey, underlining the timeless principles of hard work, perseverance, and commitment to the legal profession. Mr. Molodi emphasized the enduring values of hard work, dedication, and commitment to work.

Representing the junior lawyers, a young and vivacious Ms. Tshephang Tamotho, reflected on the challenges and opportunities facing the legal profession. As they began their legal careers, she encouraged her fellow young lawyers to embrace innovation, continuous learning, and the quest of justice. She further encouraged them to live and love their work, as they will fly high.

Ms. Nomsa Sinki Moatswi, The Director of Public Prosecutions delivered closing remarks by highlighting the achievement made by all the Divisions under Attorney General’s Chambers, not forgetting the contributions by the Regional offices. She vouched that the environment within the AGC and DPP has always been inspirational and a lifetime opportunity to learn and acquire the much sought after requisite expertise in the legal fraternity. Ms Moatswi further implored attendees to pay homage to all fallen soldiers who selflessly offered service to this Chambers.

In addition to commemorating the day, the occasion encouraged a greater appreciation of the country's rich past. Employees gathered to share their diverse talents. They showcased their cultural talents through choirs, traditional dance, poetry, and other forms of art. This was coupled with the beauty of traditional clothing being the Blue Leteisi and other Botswana colors, which displayed a brilliant colorful day. A feast of Tswana cuisine, including delicious seswaa (a pounded beef dish), bogobe (a porridge made of sorghum or maize), and stamp (dikgobe), was served to honor the culinary heritage of Botswana. This allowed the attendees a chance to enjoy Botswana's cuisine while commemorating the country's independence.
