Our Structure

The Attorney General’s Chambers is an extra ministerial department under the Office of the President and is headed by the Attorney General. The role of the Attorney General is defined in section 51 of the Constitution of Botswana as the Principal Legal Adviser to the Government. The Attorney General also attends cabinet meetings in an ex-officio capacity and serves on a number of high-level committees such as the Defence Council and Judicial Services Commission. The Department comprises five (5) Divisions, which carry out different legal and administrative functions as follows:

Civil Litigation DivisionThe division is responsible for undertaking the litigation of all civil actions on behalf of Government
International and Commercial DivisionThe division provides legal services relating to the negotiation and drafting of international and commercial agreements on behalf of Government
Legislative Drafting DivisionThe division is responsible for drafting legislation, law revision and consolidation, publishing of legislation in the Government Gazette and producing the annual editions of the Botswana Statute Law and Laws of Botswana
Directorate of Public ProsecutionsThe division is responsible for instituting and undertaking the prosecution of all criminal cases on behalf of the state
Corporate Services DivisionThe division carries out the coordination of the Department’s resources and support services
